Westport, Ireland

INTRODUCTION

Westport is a big family holiday destination located in County Mayo in the northwest of Ireland. Some of its many attractions include sea angling, pony trekking, an 18 hole golf course, and many magnificent beaches. It was also voted the tidiest town in Ireland.

ATTRACTIONS

The town is the home of Westport House and Country Estate, one of Ireland's top Day Visitor Attractions. This fine Georgian mansion, home of Lord Sligo, is open to visitors from April-September every year.

Many people use Westport as a base to Climb Croagh Patrick, one of Europe's best known places of pilgrimage. Hundreds of pilgrims make the ascent barefoot each year in the memory of St. Patrick, who spent 40 days and 40 nights fasting on the summit more than 1,500 years ago.
