Western Amish County Pennsylvania

What we're talking about here, basically, is Lancaster County (the locals say, "lank' -aster" with the emphasis on the first syllable).

Having been in the county and city many times on business, I have seen some of the most beautiful farms and interesting people, known as the Amish. Lancaster has some of the world's richest farmland, but it is being gobbled up at alarming rates by developers. But don't put all the blame on them. People take one look at so-called country living, and naturally they want to move here.

Trouble is, the Amish are being squeezed out of their agrarian lifestyle at an alarming rate. This has forced them to seek other ways of generating income; therefore, you'll find an endless stream of Dutch-this and Amish-that touristy places to spend money at. So if you have just got to see the Amish do come out here, but for a more authentic experience try to seek out the farm stands and the few Amish houses, which allow tourists into their kitchens and living rooms to purchase real home made quilts and other products.

While driving around when you see Amish folk going about their normal business please don't stare, and refrain from taking pictures, or asking them to pose. It may make them feel uncomfortable or annoyed. If you encounter a horse drawn buggy please slow down and allow them the right of way when they're turning.

A good starting point might be the historic city of Lancaster. From there, you can explore the nearby outlet centers and countryside. Once you get bored, just head 30 minutes west to York?, where you can take a tour of the Harley-Davidson factory!
