Wat Phra Kaew Amp Grand Palace Bangkok

Built in 1782 by King Rama I, the mile-square Grand Palace enclosure contains the greatest concentration of classic Thai architecture in the country. With an emphasis on elaborate ornamentation, the temples and structures of the Grand Palace dazzle visitors with mosaics, murals and imposing statuary. Boasting artistic influences from heritages as disparate as Cambodia and China as well as classical Thai, the grounds of the Grand Palace are a can't-miss attraction for admirers of Thai art as well as for travellers with a penchant for spectacle. Towering roofs peak at dramatic angles and seem to take flight with fantastic wing-shaped eaves. The harsh Bangkok light makes the gold-and-mirror-plated buildings shine like the sun. Two-story-high demon statues leer down at devotees and tourists alike, amid whom highly skilled craftspeople can be glimpsed at work with paintbrush and chisel, carefully restoring this trove of Thai cultural heritage and splendor. Undoubtedly, the crowning attraction of the Grand Palace is Wat Phra Kaew, home to the legendary Emerald Buddha statue. Carved from solid jade and housed amid a king's ransom of gold filigree work, it is truly a magnificent sight. The Emerald Buddha also is a symbol of Thailand's proud and turbulent history, having originated in the northern Lanna kingdom bordering old Siam and changing hands through wars and alliances with neighboring powers before finally coming to rest in the Grand Palace, at the impressive heart of Thailand's modern monarchy. More than a glittering showpiece of art and architecture, the Grand Palace is steeped in Thai history and mythology. Guides are available for hire at the palace entrance, and there is no better way to appreciate the splendor of the Grand Palace than through a guided tour, which will explain a great deal of the significance behind the spectacle. Arrive early to beat the crowds and the heat, which can be staggering even in January, but plan to spend several hours exploring.
