Vogelsberg Region Germany

A made-to-measure holiday region The Vogelsberg stretches across two and a half thousand square kilometres of basalt, volcanic rock from the tertiary period. The upper stretches are characterised by ragged charm, peaking at the Taufstein (773 m). The Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Reserve nurtures a still intact ecological system, which is actively protected by many nature preservation groups. The climate is pleasant even at the height of summer: never too hot during the day and refreshingly cool at night.

The Wetterau, a fertile belt, is situated between the Taunus and the Vogelsberg. In this southern part of Hesse you will find the state baths of Bad Nauheim (with exquisite Art Nouveau buildings) and Bad Salzhausen, as well as the spa town of Bad Vilbel. The symbol of the Wetterau is Burg Münzenberg, which, like the Wartburg, is one of Germany’s most renowned medieval sites. It belonged to Kuno von Münzenberg, a liegeman of Barbarossa.

The original construction from 1170-1180 has only survived as a ruin. The medieval touch is still very tangible in the towns and communities today, with numerous interesting places to visit, such as Butzbach, Ortenberg, Büdingen and the district town of Friedberg. The old centre of Alsfeld is completely under preservation order and was voted the European model town by the European Council in 1975. Sport and fitness are fun in this region: cycling tours, fishing, skydiving, gliding and summer bobsleigh, as well as downhill and cross-country skiing in winter.
