The White House

The White House is perhaps one of the most famous homes in America. It has been home to almost every president of the United States. It has a very historic past. George Washington declared that the house should be built near the Potomac River. A competition was held in order to find a builder. Out of nine proposals the winner was James Hoban.

Construction first started in 1792 and was not completed until 1800. It has survived fire as well as renovations. There are 6 floors, 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, and 3 elevators. Some of the rooms are the Blue Room, China Room, Green Room, Red Room, Library, and State Dining Room.

The White House offers tours to the public free of charge. You have to book in advance in order to tour, because it is on a first-come, first-served basis. Tours are Tuesday-Saturday 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
