Hofburg PalaceThe Hofburg, with its beautiful huge fountains and statues, is truly impressive. To reach it (you can hardly miss it), head up Kohlmarkt to Michaelerplatz 1, Burgring (tel. 01/587-5554 for general information. You can also take the U-Bahn to Stephansplatz, Herrengasse, or Mariahilferstrasse, or Tram nos. 1, 2, D, or J to Burgring). A city within a city, it has survived a fire and three sieges. There are approximately 2,600 rooms, but a only a limited number are open to the public.
