The Grand Palace

Built in 1782 by King Rama I, the mile-square Grand Palace enclosure contains the greatest concentration of classic Thai art and architecture in the country. It is open to visitors daily, though appropriate attire is imperative. Most Thai visitors wear suits and carry votive offerings, as the current monarch, King Phumiphon Adulyadej, is revered and beloved by the population. It is common to see a mixture of worshippers and tourists within the compound, and guided tours can be very informative in deciphering the rich historical significance and fascinating mythology behind the murals, statues, stupas and temples of the Grand Palace.
