The arc honors those who have fought for France particularly in the Napoleanic Wars. It stands at the western end of the Champs-Elysees. This is the second largest triumphal arch in the world and was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus. It was commisioned in 1806 by Napoleon but was not completed until 1836.
It also includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame that burns in memory of those who died that were never identified.
