Occupying part of the Grand Palace enclosure, the spectacular Phra Kaew temple was built by King Rama I to house the Emerald Buddha. The 45 cm. statue is carved from pure jade and clothed in gold, and the clothing is changed by the king himself at the beginning of each of Thailand's three seasons, in March, July and November. The Emerald Buddha is an artwork of paramount historical significance, and it is one of the most spectacular sights in Bangkok.
