The Tazara express is a slow train that runs across Zambia, near the border with Malawi all the way to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
The journey can take up to 3/4 days as the train is VERY prone to breakages and delays. However this makes the trip more of an adventure.
Women sailing fruit on the tracks
You can spend your day chatting to other travellers in the bar on board, taste traditional cuisine (very limited selection by day 3!!) or buy fruit out the window from stalls erected within cm's of the train tracks.
At times you will gasp in amazement as the train rolls right through a huge nature reserve where you can see giraffes, elephants and buffallo run along side the train!
A four birth cabin in first class is a must at only 50 Dollars including meals. Thi means you have a bed to sleep on instead of a chair. 3rd class is to be avoided unless you don't mind being squashed, hot and anoyed by endless children screaming, or laughing, people snoring and general discomfort!
