INTRODUCTION
This is the home of Florida State University, Florida A & M University, and Tallahassee Community College. It is located in Leon county named after the explorer Ponce de Leon.
HISTORY
First occupied by the Alpalachee tribe, this town was the site of many Spanish missions in the 1600s. These were later destroyed in 1700 by a combination of Creek Indians and British forces. Seminole Indians migrated to this area during the late 18th century from Georgia and Alabama. It has since then been a major site for industry in Florida with the creation of the Tallahasse- St. Marks Railroad, the third oldest in the U.S.
