Suffolk County Long Island

The eastern end of Long Island is home to wide variety of towns from the hustle and bustle of the Hamptons, to the quiet vineyards of the North Fork. Long Island has something to offer every personality type in every season.

INTRODUCTION

Spend the summer months enjoying the miles of ocean and bay beaches, and eating your way through all the seafood you can get your hands on. Go kayaking, rent a motor boat, try your hand at fishing or water sports, take a stroll through the Hamptons, or enjoy one of the many small quiet towns. Be sure to be on the island for Mattituck's Strawberry Festival, a highlight of every Suffolk County summer.

When fall comes around it is out to the orchards, pumpkin patches, and to the many wine tasting rooms of the Forks. Apple orchards, pumpkin patches, corn fields, and fresh produce stands line the streets of the North and South Forks creating the ideal atmosphere for a weekend drive and a day out. If you are feeling really adventurous, make the drive to Montauk Point. Explore the lighthouse and if you can brave the cold, the end of November, beginning of December is the perfect time to take a short hike and come face-to-face with a seal on one of Montauks pebbly beaches.

The winter months bring all sorts of adventure. Ice skating rinks begin to open, the inlets and bays begin to freeze, and the snow starts to fall creating a beach scene like no other. Being so close to New York City, many people head into Manhattan and explore all that NYC has to offer.

When spring comes around, bring on the beach! After months of winter, Suffolk country inhabitants cant wait to get back to the beach. A beautiful time to be on the island, and one of the slower tourist seasons, Spring is the ideal time to visit Suffolk if you are looking for a calm seaside vacation.

RESTAURANTS

Sally's Cocofe: It seems too good to be true! Huntington is home to Sally's Cocofe, a casual yet elegant dining space with a menu you have to taste to believe. The carefully chosen menu offers guests the freshest ingredients from around the world: wine, chocolate cocktails, chocolate confections, and other desserts. Traditional desserts made with milk and dark chocolate are served, as well as some very complex and innovative concoctions. Chocolates infused with flavors like vanilla, peppermint, and even chili revive your senses. I was very pleased to know that Sally's has a menu of savory foods that is almost as long as the chocolate menu, a relief for those mixed group of friends who don't all have a sweet tooth. Don't let the sophisticated decor fool you. This restaurant manages to provide high quality ingredients for very reasonable prices.

CULINARY CLASSES

Alice Ross Hearth Studios: This cooking school certainly stands alone when compared to other cooking schools. While others prefer to invite the world into their kitchens, Alice Ross offers a shining example of the amazing cuisine that can be found in your own home; America, specifically. Classes, which include a full lunch, will teach the patriotic American how to make ice cream with period recipes and equipment, the Native American roots in American cuisine, and how to make pies, jellies and soup with strawberries, a fruit that has an important history in American cookery.
