Strasbourg Alsace

Strasbourg, located in the western part of France, bordering Germany, is the capital of the Alsace region. In 1988 Strasbourg's historic city center, the Grande Île, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Because Strasbourg is also the seat of many European organizations, such as the Council of Europe, it is often considered the capital of Europe. Strasbourg is heavily influenced by the German culture, which is seen in the typical Rhineland houses that are found all over the historic city center. The unique feel to this city is certainly worth the visit.

ATTRACTIONS

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg: This gothic sandstone cathedral is the most famous landmark of Strasbourg. As one of the tallest churches in the world, this cathedral can even be seen from the Black Forest across the Rhine. The astronomical clock inside the cathedral, with its animated characters and angels, is a mathematical masterpiece, able to indicate leap years and equinoxes as well as calculate the date of Easter in the Christian calendar, long before computers were even invented.

EVENTS

Strasbourg Christmas Market: This is one of France's biggest Christmas markets. The atmosphere in Strasbourg is unbeatable, which is why it not only attracts thousands of visitors from all over France, but also from other countries in Europe. The market is set up in the historic city center, on the Grande Île, around the cathedral. The smell of gingerbread and mulled wine linger in the air while visitors find unique Christmas presents in market stalls. This event usually lasts from November-December.
