Stirling Castle

Sitting majestically atop a high crag above the city is Stirling Castle. Because the city of Stirling is located at a crucial crossroads, Stirling Castle's history is long and full of conflict. The castle has been besieged at least 16 times since it was built in the late 15th and early 16th century. Important names in these battles include such legendary fighters as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Mary, Queen of Scots also grew up here. She would go on to play an important role in British history and would eventually be executed by her first cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Today, Stirling Castle is open to the public and is considered one of the finest castles in Scotland. The building of the castle spanned over a century, but the grand Renaissance style is unmistakable. The interior of the castle now serves as a museum, featuring a variety of sensory and interactive exhibits including a recreation of 16th century kitchens. The Royal Palace, where the King and Queen would have lived, is closed for renovations until 2011. Adult admission to the castle is £8.50.
