Sleigh Ride Salzburg

Sleigh rides are a great way to see Salzburg and the surrounding area in the winter months.

About an hour away from Salzburg lies the town of Filzmoos, which has a sleigh ride that is well worth the ride there. Costing about $20 per person for a day ride, and $25 for the evening, the horse drawn sleighs are big enough to fit nine passengers. Personal sleigh rental can also be requested for up to 6 people for $150. The ride takes you through a winter wonderland of pine trees, and snow capped mountains into parts of the Alps left untouched by humans. Picturesque views of the mountains can be seen time every way you turn.

The ride lasts about three hours, including a one-hour stop at an authentic Austrian restaurant for either lunch or dinner. The restaurant is known for their homemade goulash, and an Austrian dessert called Kaiser schmall, which is a cross between French toast and a pancake. Served with powdered sugar, apple sauce, it’s a sweet tooth’s dream.

Although usually chilly, the surrounding trees provide protection from the wind, and the sleigh drivers provide enough blankets for all the passengers on the sleigh (if you’re of age, they pass around homemade schnapps). The breathtaking views of the Alps and good company make this sleigh ride a perfect activity for a winter holiday.
