Serendipity was named after the three princes of Sri Lanka, formerly known as Serendip. The restaurant has one of the most glamorous histories in the city. Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe were regular patrons of the restaurant. First Lady Jackie Kennedy even once tried to buy the recipe for Serendipity's famous frozen hot chocolate.
In 2004, Serendipity III introduced a record-breaking sundae, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most expensive dessert to date at a whopping $1,000. Its ingredients: 5 scoops of Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream covered in 23K edible gold leaf, drizzled in the world's most expensive chocolate. The sundae also includes candied fruits from Paris, truffles and marzipan cherries, and an exclusive dessert caviar famous for its golden appearance.
Serendipity III has appeared in namely two movies. One which is named after the restaurant, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.
