INTRODUCTION
Known as “San Sal”, San Salvador is the largest city in El Salvador. It is visited by relatively few foreign tourists, which means visitors can get an authentic look at Salvadoran culture and sights. The city is built on a volcanic slope parallel to the Pacific coast and beneath the San Salvador Volcano. The city has a great, extensive bus network that can take visitors anywhere they want to go. While the civil war is still fresh in the minds of many Salvadorans, it is a safe destination for tourists who want to enjoy the year round warm weather, Mayan communities, colonial churches, and natural sites, like Lake Ipolango.
HISTORY
San Salvador was established in 1525.
