Redding, a small city about an hour south of Mount Shasta, is the main city in the region north of Sacramento. The Shasta Dam and Lake Shasta are popular with tourists, as are nearby Lassen and Mount Shasta. Redding is the county seat of Shasta County, and is surrounded by mountains. The scenic area has a dense population of trees.
Lake Shasta’s rocky beaches make it difficult to picnic near the lake, so many visitors choose to rent a houseboat and cruise around the huge lake instead. Lake Shasta’s water is warm and suitable for swimming.
The Sundial Bridge is an architectural masterpiece: it acts as a pedestrian bridge and a working sundial. The bridge spans the Sacramento River and has a unique frosted-glass floor that is especially beautiful at sunset. It is located in Turtle Bay Exploration Park, which also contains a museum.
