As all of Bath's architecture had been, the Pulteney Bridge was greatly affected by the architecture found in Italy, especially Florence. The design of the bridge closely resembles that of the Ponte Vecchio with the homes and shops built right along it over the River Avon. The south side, or front of the Bridge, has a beautiful facade but the north side is very shabby. The old legend says that the bridge was designed with a woman in mind, one who washed her face but forgot to wipe her behind.
