Prague Castle

The largest castle in the world, this magnificent structure is known for its history, which dates back to the 9th century. Consisting of several architectural styles, the castle contains a famous cathedral, St. Vitus, and a national art gallery. The Roman Catholic Cathedral not only served as a place of worship but also the coronation place for Czech kings and queens. Currently, the castle is occupied as the main residency of the head of state. As stunning at night as during the day, the Hradcany (castle district) is worth a morning and evening visit. During the day one can tour inside the castle grounds and enter the stunning St. Vitus Cathedral. As the castle is set spectacularly atop a hill overlooking the rest of Prague, views of the city's winding streets and red-roofed buildings are immediately followed by a glimpse of the countryside in the distance. There is no comparison, however, to the experience of climbing the broad, slightly winding stairs at night, glancing occasionally over the low wall at the ever-increasing views of the bustling city below. There are very few visitors at night and the castle grounds are starkly peaceful, a welcome relief after a day in the crowded city. The walls and cobblestone streets are bathed dreamily in a dim yellow light. There are often couples wandering quietly along the exterior of the church, and several guards to ensure the safety of nighttime visitors. If there was ever a castle straight out of a fairy tale, it would be Prague Castle.
