A unique side trip for any history buff would be the tragic site of Pompeii. Here visitors can tour the long-lost, ancient metropolis. Be sure to pick up a map when you visit because the site is extensive and someone could easily get lost amoung the ruins! The best way to view the city is with a guide--their knowledge of the site will allow history to come alive right before your eyes!
Walk through the auditorium, tour the baths, stop at the bars, or tour the red-light district. The site is very well preserved, allowing each and every glance to pick up a new detail. Find mosaics in perfect condition, as well as water towers, pipes, crosswalks, cart ruts, stairs, and even graffiti!
If visiting during the summer months, be sure to bring a hat and plenty of water--there is little shade and temperatures can climb quickly!
Outside the ruins, visitors can find a myriad of things to do. All along the streets are vendors selling pottery, jewelry, books, and more. Pick up a special souvenir of the region, such as a piece of volcanic rock from Mt. Vesuvius. Hungry or thristy after your archeological exploration? Stop by one of the numerous fruit and gelato stands.
