HISTORY
Pittsburgh (or "The 'Burgh" as locals call it) was originally a steel town, an industry that brought wealth and business for quite sometime. With the downtown section positioned directly at the meeting point of the Ohio, Monongahela and Allegheny rivers, the city has great waterway access. This positioning made it easy for barges and steel-working machinery to be transported easily through out the area. Traces of the steel empire that was Pittsburgh can still be seen today from old coke furnaces to coal mines.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
There is a distinct dialect used in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. This way of speaking is jokingly reffered to as "Pittsburgh-eese" by locals. Here is a crash course:
1)"Yinz" is a word used as a substitute for the word "you" or "you" meaning "you" and "them". It is comperable to the southern word "Ya'll".
2) The Pittsburgh football team The Steelers is pronounced "'Da Stillers."
3) There is no soda. Anything with carbination and coloring is reffered to as "pop".
4) THE CLARKS. A band called The Clarks have become a local legend. They are best described as a mix of folk, rock and pop and are as much a part of the Pittsburgh culture as the three rivers.
