Oslo Norway

INTRODUCTION

Once named Cristinia, Oslo is the capital and largest city in the country of Norway. The city is relatively small in population and large in landmass due to its extensive green areas that are favored by its residence. Oslo has so much green that it would not be unlikely to see a moose roaming around its city limits. Due to its northern location the city has relatively cool to warm summers and very cold and long winters.

HISTORY

Recent archaeological research uncovered Christian burials before 1000, evidence of a preceding urban settlement (before the Norse sagas, Oslo was founded around 1048 by king Harald Hardråde). The city was Norway's capital until the country joined a union with Denmark, which greatly reduced the city and the country's powers. During the next several centuries the city was nearly destroyed by fires and rebuilt across the bay by order of King Christian IV, who also had the city renamed Cristinia in his honor. The city regained prominence and its capital status when Norway broke from the union in 1814. The city was renamed Oslo in 1925.
