Old Sacramento is a small slice of town on the Sacramento River that takes visitors back to the Gold Rush days. Historic wooden buildings in the Old West style line the streets and have been preserved and restored since the 1800s. In the Wells Fargo museum and bank, visitors can learn about how Wells Fargo brought banking to California in 1852 and later controlled the western Pony Express. The BF Hastings Building was the site of the first California Supreme Court and the last stop on the western Pony Express route, and contains a map of the Pony Express as it existed in the 1860s. The Big Four House is a national landmark constructed by the state’s four railroad pioneers: Collis Huntington, Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford and Charles Crocker. Sacramento Engine Company No. 3 is the oldest standing firehouse in the city, and the Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum offers visitors a glimpse into past days of one-room schoolhouses.
Visitors can also take advantage of dining opportunities, souvenir shops, and candy and ice-cream parlors.
