Cork is a great town for shopping and one destination that should not be missed is the Old English Market. Located in downtown Cork, this indoor market has entrances on several streets (although some are a bit hard to spot). The market itself has been held since 1610, but the building dates from 1786. Sadly, it suffered a great deal of fire damage in 1980, but has since been painstakingly rebuilt.
Inside the market you will find everything from homemade breads, artisan Irish cheeses, and freshly caught seafood to Parisian cakes, gourmet chocolates, and barrels of olives. If you are looking for a true taste of Ireland this is a great place to pick up fresh organic produce, meats, and cheeses. The wide variety of foods from continental Europe is also an attraction. The Farmgate Cafe and Restaurant, located on the second floor of the market, serves a variety of traditional dishes made from the ingredients downstairs, making it a great place to stop for lunch.
The Old English Market is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
