Onsens, or natural hot springs, are a traditional way to find rest and relaxation in Japan. The Oedo-Onsen Monogatari in Odaiba, Tokyo, is one of the most tourist-friendly onsens. Calling itself an "Onsen Theme Park", it's designed to give visitors a taste of life in the ancient Edo period. It offers traditional food and drinks, entertainment and a wide range of spa services. There is something for everyone at Oedo-Onsen Monogatari.
After checking in, choose from a colorful selection of yukatas, lightweight decorative robes, much like a kimono. Once you've changed into your yukata, you're free to explore.
At the center of the grounds, you'll find a replica of a small Edo period town. Have lunch on Hirokouji Street or hunt for souvenirs in the surrounding shops.
Then, head off to the open air hot springs - Hyakkei no yu, or the indoor baths - Yuya. No bathing suits allowed, but no worries for the bashful - there are designated baths for men and women.
You can get a massage or beauty treatment, relax in the sauna, or dip into a hot sand bath.
Looking for a truly exotic treatment? Visit the only Turkish fish foot bath in Tokyo, where fish nibble at your feet to give you a ticklish pedicure.
Many of the services must be booked in advance, so call ahead to schedule an appointment. Be aware that it is onsen policy not to admit anyone with a tattoo.
