The endless rows of crosses honoring the dead will make your breath stop. The memorial honors American soldiers who died during WWII and looks over Omaha Beach, which was one of the landing points in the Normandy Invasion which truly entered the US in the European part of the war. There is a chapel in the center of the ceremony, with war memorials and the names of 1,557 Americans who lost their lives but could not be found. This number is in addition to the thousands buried in the lot. Visiting this sight will give you an appreciation for the magnitude of loss that we of the newer generations can't really understand.
After walking through the cemetery, you should explore the surrounding shore line. Deep holes scatter the land where American bombs hit to kill Germans that were firing at the soldiers on the beaches along the shore. Also look at the fortifications the Germans built along the cliffs and the damages American and English forces made when invading to regain France for the Allied powers.
