INTRODUCTION
Newcastle is Australia's sixth largest city, the second largest in the state of New South Wales, and Australia's largest provincial city. Situated 160 km north of Sydney on the mouth of the Hunter River, it is the predominant city in the Hunter Valley region, as well as a significant coal shipping center.
ATTRACTIONS
Newcastle holds a variety of Cultural Events and Festivals, many of which attract national and some even international attention. Namely the Vodafone Surfest held in March.
The number one attraction of the region is its beaches, great for a relaxing day or grabbing a few waves. The ocean baths are also a highlight. A great place to swim and relax, the Merewether Baths, are the largest sea baths in the Southern Hemisphere. The Bogey Hole, another popular spot, is New South Wales’ oldest ocean baths, built by convicts in 1819.
Hunter Valley
Hunter Valley stretches from the Goulburn River and Wollemi National Park in the south right up to Barrington Tops National Park in the north. Not only does Hunter Valley boast wonderful scenery, but it is also home to large wine and coal industries. Boasting over 120 wineries in the Hunter.
The heart of the Lower Hunter wineries and vineyards is based around Pokolbin, North west of Cessnock. There are around 50 wineries in the whole area, with the majority open for wine tasting and, of course, sales. Hunter Valley is one of the oldest and most famous wine regions in Australia, boasting many of the large names in wine, including: Lindemans Wine, Tyrell's Vineyards, and Wyndham Estate.
Muswellbrook
Muswellbrook is a historic town with a wide range of interesting historic buildings. Visit the historic town of Singleton, founded in 1820 and one of the earliest towns founded in New South Wales. Singleton is a coaling town, with a museum in the old jail telling its history.
