Considering that it was built in the 18th century (as an expansion of and an alternative to the overcrowded Old Town), the New Town is probably not the most accurate name for this section of Edinburgh. Still, this neighborhood, which originally comprised the area between Prince, George, and Queen Street as well as Waverly Station, remains the Edinburgh's commercial center. The stately Georgian architecture makes this section of the city distinctively elegant, and it is generally considered a masterpiece of city planning. Prince Street is where you will find most of the major retailers in the city, while George Street is popular for its nightlife. The New Town is also home to the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy.
