The Bicentennial year was more than a
celebration for America, on February 14th, 1976
it was the union of hearts for my spouse and I.
The ensuing weeks we spent our honeymoon at the
Fairmont Acalpulco Princess back than known
only as the Acalpulco Princess and a refuge for
Howard Hughes, the millionaire, at that same
time. Our long drive from the airport into Acalpulco
bore the shocking realities of the poor. It was
a tremendous lesson to me early in my adulthood.
Three sided huts were home to many of the
residents there. Witnessing the depths of
impoverishment ceased any reasons I had to
complain. This experience was so humbling and
motivated me to remain grateful, whatever might
befall me.
