Mount Kenya Travel Guide

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro.

It a great place to escape the vast desesrt plains and emerse yourself in lush forests with views of mist covered mountain peaks and frigid glaciers.

A draw for climbers, the extinct volcano boasts a variety of terrain including woodland, rock, snow and glacier. Portions of the mountain are blanketed by pristine forest with bamboo, crotons, and African sage.

Never lacking in Kodak moments, Mount Kenya also plays host to lakes, mineral springs and several species of rare or endangered animals and plants.

The national park that surrounds the area was made a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997. At lower altitudes Colobus and other monkeys and Cape Buffalo are prevalent. Some larger mammals such as elephants range up to 4,500 m.

If you decide to climb Mount Kenya ensure you are equipped with sufficient food, water and climbing gear. Temperatures on the top can drop below feeezing so dress accordingly.
