Montreux Switzerland

INTRODUCTION

Montreux is a popular and beautiful city in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, only an hour train ride away from Geneva. It is situated right next to the Lake Geneva and the foot of the Alps and ever since the 19th century, Montreux has attracted many rich tourists from across Europe with its luxurious hotels, casinos, and splendid panorama.

Montreux is also surrounded by grapevines on hills, which gives hikers a great opportunity to enjoy the countryside of Montreux and the stunning view from the hills.

This city was and still is a very popular residence for many famous people, such as Bill Gates, Jean-Jaques Rousseau, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and Freddie Mercury. As a tribute to Freddie Mercury, a statue has been erected along the shore of Lake Geneva and in the past couple of years fans have gathered in Montreux every September to attend Freddie Mercury Montreux Memorial Day.

Deep Purple's song "Smoke on the Water" was written about Montreux, when a Frank Zappa fan put a casino on fire.

ATTRACTIONS

The Chillon Castle: This castle dates back to the 12th century and originally consisted of almost 100 independent buildings, until it gradually became one big castle. It can be visited and viewed, including the prison, which, along with the Castle Chillon, was made famous by Lord Byron. The view of the city from the tower of the castle is magnificent. The castle is located right by the lake and the Alps. People who are interested in history will find little holes in the side of the mountain. These were made during World War II, when Swiss soldiers hid inside the mountains. These holes are visible from the street and their purpose was to fire at enemies in case of an invasion.

The Chocolate Train: When visiting Switzerland, one cannot leave the country without having tasted what Switzerland is truly famous for: chocolate and cheese. Swiss chocolate and cheese are renowned for their fresh, mouth-smacking taste. The train ride starts in Montreux and visitors are provided with food and drinks. The ride to Gruyères, famous for its cheese, has spectacular views. In Gruyères, you can tour the cheese factory, followed by a tour of the Nestlé chocolate factory. And yes, you get to sample everything! A favorite among families, it is an experience for anyone who loves chocolate and cheese!

EVENTS

Montreux Jazz Festival: Switzerland's most famous jazz festival, but also considered one of the most prestigious jazz festivals in all of Europe, the Montreux Jazz Festival takes place every year in July, right by the Lake Geneva. Nowadays, non-jazz artists perform during the festival as well, and it is the summer event the Swiss wait for. An absolute must for jazz lovers.
