Mombassa Travel Guide

Mombassa is the second biggest city in Kenya and sits on Mombasa island on the Indian Ocean. The city's palm tree lined beaches up and down the north and south coast line attract tourists to this majestic location each year.

Mombassa coastline

The architecture and markets in and around the old town reflect its Arab heritage. Its Indian influences are evident in mosques and temples that date back as far as the early 1800s. European colonials left their mark at sites such as Fort Jesus which would have been a slave fort.

Barter is the name of the game here from paying for your taxi and souvenirs to booking a hotel room.

Main Mombassa attractions include;

  • Fort Jesus Museum
  • Old Town Market
  • Mamba village crocodile farm
  • Gedi Ruins
  • Diving and snorkelling with Peponi Divers
  • Feed the Giraffes at Haller park
