INTRODUCTION
Located in Middlesex County, along the Connecticut River, in the south-central part of the state, 16 miles south of Hartford, Middleton is a residential city and college town that is home to Wesleyan University.
HISTORY
Middletown was incorporated as a town in 1650, but at that time it was known for its indian name, "Mattabeseck" until 1653 when it got its present name. In 1784, the central settlement was incorporated as a city distinct from the town. Middletown was formerly identified as a sailing port and an industrial center, but nowadays it is a residential city and college town, being home to Wesleyan University.
