Established in 1980, the refuge began its origin in the early 1900's when President Teddy Roosevelt held office. This 4.9 million-acre preserve includes the volanic islands of the Aleutian chain, the seabird cliffs of the remote Pribilofs, and icebound lands washed by the Chukchi Sea. It provides a home for about 40 million seabirds, which represent more than 30 species.
