INTRODUCTION
Madison is home to the University of Wisconsin. Though not the largest city in the state, Madison is the capital. Due to its low unemployment rate, it has been considered one of the best places to live in America for years. Restaurants and shops are located around the university. Madison also hosts Rhythm and Booms, the largest fireworks festival in the midwest, as well as a number of music festivals during the summer months.
HISTORY
When former federal judge James Duane Doty purchased a thousand acres of swamp and forest land in 1836, Madison was created. It was voted as the capital of the territory because of its strategic location central to many of Wisconsin's important cities. During the Civil War, this was the center of Union activity in Wisconsin.
