Libya

INTRODUCTION

This country in Northern Africa, borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, lies between Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west.

Libyan uprisings and protests began in mid February, 2011 against Muammar Gaddafi’s 42 year regime. As the protests spread Gaddafi responded with military force which soon gave way to full armed conflict between rebels and Gaddafi supporters. A multinational military intervention began on March 19 to establish a no fly zone over Libya.

Since the start of the uprising many countries have evacuated their citizens from Libya including the US, which has also temporarily suspended its Tripoli embassy operations. The US State Department has issued a travel advisory warning US citizens against travel to Libya and recommending that US citizens depart the country immediately due to continued violence and deteriorating security.
