Originally a completely separate port, Leith has now been fully absorbed into the city of Edinburgh. For many years Leith and its docks were considered a very rough area. Thanks to modern developments, however, it is now one of the more popular residential districts in the city, with broken down warehouses being converted to high-end apartments. This part of the city retains its historical value, however and buildings dating back to the 17th century still stand alongside the more modern developments.
