INTRODUCTION
Launceston is centrally located within the Valley of the Senses--Tasmania's premiere food and wine region. A 45 minute flight from Melbourne and a 2 hour and 45 minute drive from Hobart, Launceston is an easily accessible destination.
The Tamar Valley, only a short drive from Launceston, is the most prominent wine region in Tasmania. With its fragrant sparklings, zesty Rieslings, buttery Chardonnays, and complex Pinot Noirs, the Tamar Valley is a fantastic region to explore. If beer takes your fancy, make sure to stop by J. Boag & Son for a tour of their historical brewery.
Along with excellent wine and beer, the Launceston area is also a hub for culinary lovers. Seafood, ocean trout, wallaby, prime venison, milk-fed lambs, organic berries, stone fruits, and cheeses are just a few of the wide array of treats to tantalize the taste buds.
HISTORY
In 1798 European explorers George Bass and Matthew Flinders were sent to investigate whether a straight existed between the mainland of Australia and Van Diemen's Land (the original name for Tasmania). Settlement of the area began in 1804, with the city of Launceston established in 1805.
