Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace is one of the many historic royal palaces in London, located in the South Kensington district. It was purchased by King William III and Queen Mary II in the late 1600s and was the official residence of many royals including Queen Victoria and Princess Diana.

Today, the palace is open to the public and holds many exhibits that highlight the history of the British elite. Adults can pay around 20 pounds (children under 16 pay around 10) to tour the inside of the palace, which showcases both permanent and temporary exhibits. There are family rates and online discounts, so plan ahead.

Don't miss attractions such as the King's Gallery and the King's Staircase. Both were part of the private chambers of George I and painted with life-sized scenes of both Greek mythology and depictions of King George’s Royal Court.

Go to the Orangery Restaurant for a superbly elegant afternoon tea. This ornately-detailed white hall is lined with windows that allow you to enjoy the gardens from indoors. Indulge yourself with the Royal Champagne Tea or simply order a pot of Darjeeling and a slice of Orangery cake, which is a light two-layer cake with an orange buttercream frosting.

The beautiful Kensington Gardens are also home to the charming bronze Peter Pan statue, which will enchant young and old alike.
