House on the Rock, Spring Green

In the mid-1940s, inspired by Japanese architecture and perhaps spurred by an argument with Frank Lloyd Wright, Alex Jordan decided to build a house. Very early after its conception, the House on the Rock became a tourist destination, as visitors from all over came to see the architectural marvel, standing on a rock column above the city of Spring Green. When Jordan began asking for 50 cent donations, the House on the Rock attraction was born.

Throughout his life, Jordan was an avid collector, and today people come to the House on the Rock equally for the displays, as for the architecture. The collections (of antiques, dolls, mechanical musical instruments, and thousands of other oddities) are displayed in a whimsical rather than rational manner. The House on the Rock also boasts the world's largest carousel, with over 269 different animals to ride (and not one of them a horse).

The grounds of the House on the Rock contain gardens, a golf course, and The House on the Rock Resort. The House on the Rock is divided into three sections, each of which requires a separate admission. Section one includes the original house and the "Infinity Room," section two contains the "Streets of Yesterday" and the carousel, and section three features the "Dollhouse Room," and the "Organ Room." The "Ultimate Experience" ticket includes all three sections and costs $28.50 for adults.
