Homer Alaska

Homer is listed in John Villani's book as one of the 100 Best Small Art Towns in America. Homer is known as "Alaska’s Art Capital," and with good reason, too. Local and community members offer theatre, dance and music, and you can select from performance, visual or literary art.

There is also an abundance of world-class art galleries and artist studios in the community. The First Friday Art Gallery Openings are held year-round; here, you can meet and hold open discussions with various artists on the 1st Friday of each month, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Other activities include clamming, eco-tours and adventures, kayaking, whale watching, flight seeing, bearing viewing, water taxi and more.

The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is the largest wildlife refuge in Alaska. Headquartered in Homer, this refuge offers bird viewing and more. For prime brown bearing viewing, you can visit the Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks; both have beautiful scenery of the pristine wilderness.

Take the water taxi if you want to relax and enjoy views of the mountains, glaciers and wildlife in the bay as you cross over to Kachemak Bay State Park. If you want to indulge in a little hiking, there is also more than 90 miles of managed trails near the coast, by glacier lakes and inland up ridges.
