Opening its doors to the public in 1993, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum the United States’ official memorial to the Holocaust. The Hall of Remembrance and the Permanent Exhibition are the museum’s two main attractions. The Hall of Remembrance is a octagonal shaped room, where visitors can light a candle in remembrance, see the eternal flame, or sit down on the stairs facing the center of the room. The Permanent Exhibition is a timeline of the Holocaust using artifacts and films.
A memorial was also created in memory of Stephen Tyrone Johns, the security guard who lost his life in 2009 protecting visitors from a extremist terrorist attack.
