Hobart Australia

INTRODUCTION

Hobart is Tasmania's capital city. It is unique among the state capitals in that it has a strong sense of its colonial, 19th century heritage and still happily enjoys the notion that it is nothing more than a big country town. Hobart has some great places to visit. From the central sites along the Derwent river you can go to Battery Point, where you will find some very haunted places, to the first settlement further up river created by British explorers. Sights abound, including the old gun placements created in the 1890's when local politicians thought that the Island was about to be invaded by the Russians. Very large guns were made to point down river to stop Russian boats; these guns were later melted in World Wars I and II. The battlements still exist in this amazing testament to the paranoia of times past.

ATTRACTIONS

Franklin River Rafting

Stunning cliffs, wild rapids, cascading waterfalls, and lush rainforest--this is the untouched wilderness that is Tasmania's Franklin River. Regarded as one of the most spectacular and difficult river trips around, this rafting expedition is the ultimate challenge.

Hobart Cadbury Cruise

Climb aboard the Cadbury ferry and experience an informative and delightful cruise. You will pass under the Tasman Bridge and head up the Derwent River on a pleasurable scenic boat ride. Upon arrival at the Cadbury Schweppes Chocolate Factory, you will enjoy a fascinating tour, while satisfying your taste buds with some Cadbury samples. Located on a picturesque peninsula, this is the perfect opportunity to fuse your love of chocolate with a splendid natural experience. The tour is 4 hours in duration.

If you would rather visit the factory without the cruise, you can purchase tickets and drive yourself, or sign up for a coach tour that will take you there on a comfortable, air conditioned bus.
