INTRODUCTION
HISTORY
Hitchcock was created as a station for the railroad between Galveston and Houston in 1873. By the beginning of the 20th century Hitchcock had become a vegetable shipping center.
In the 1930s however, the settlement's economy crashed after several insect plagues hit the surrounding areas. The area struggled until World War II when the US Navy establishment an anti-aircraft training base as well as a Naval airship station.
When the war ended, both bases were used as discharge centers resulting in many former enlisted men settling in the area.
The town of Hitchcock was created in 1960 because of increased interest of the area. By this time, the population had reached nearly 7,000. Today, the town serves as a suburb of Galveston and houses workers from the Johnson Space Center?.
