Harar

The ancient city of Harar in south eastern Ethiopia, near the Somali border, is a UNESCO world heritage site. The enclosed walled city is, according to UNESCO, "the fourth holiest city of Islam" with 82 mosques, three of which date from the 10th century, and 102 shrines.

Harar is also famous for its distinctive, natural processed coffees and Harari beer which bear the same name. The coffee factory and Harar brewery are must see attractions.

The french poet and writer Arthur Rimbaud once lived in the city and his house is now a museum and art gallery.

A long-standing tradition of feeding meat to hyenas has also developed (during the 1960s) into an impressive night show for tourists. At the gates of the city, tourists, with the help of 'The Hyeena man' can feed wild hyeenas large chunks of meat direct from your mouth to theirs!

Spend some time in this mythical city that will delight all your senses.
