Haleakala National Park, Hawaii Travel Guide

Haleakala is an amazing example of the forces of nature that helped to form the Hawaiian islands. The park is centered around the Haleakal Crater, a large dormant volcano, and expands down to a subtropical rain-forest. Hiking the crater at sunrise is an experience that you will not soon forget.

The weather here transitions from an arid climate in the mountains to the subtropics near the coast. Be prepared for rain showers at the lower elevations and cool weather higher up.

There are great hikes through the rain-forest in the Kipahulu Area near the eastern coast. The area is full of tropical plants and birds as well as natural streams and pools that visitors often swim in. However, be careful because flash floods in the area are possible and have been known to cause injuries to swimmers.
