Gruene Texas

INTRODUCTION

HISTORY

German immigrants, Ernst and Antoinette Gruene were the first settlers who came to the area of present day Gruene, Texas in 1845. Their home is now a Bed & Breakfast called Antoinette's Cottage.

The first store was a mercantile store which was built in 1878. Slightly thereafter, a cotton gin powered by the Guadalupe River and a new dance hall (Gruene Hall) which became the center of the communities' social life were built.

In 1920 the last Gruene died and the downfall of Gruene's development began. The only establishment that never closed was Gruene Hall.

In 1974, new businesses were established. Today Gruene is a thriving community and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
