Great Buddha

The Great Buddha, located in Kamakura, is a larger than life bronze monument to Amida Buddha that looms over visitors of the Buddhist temple of Kotokuin.

Positioned in peaceful meditation, it sits almost 44 feet high and weighs 93 tons. It was cast in 1252 during the Kamakura period, and was originally housed inside a temple. Sometime in the late 15th century, a tsunami destroyed the temple, leaving only the statue. It has remained outdoors ever since.

With a backdrop of cherry blossoms, pine trees and rolling hills, it is a spectacular sight.
