INTRODUCTION
Classy and sophisticated, Geneva sits nestled in the southwest corner of Switzerland, between the French border and the southwestern Alps. France is within easy reach of the city – trains and low-cost airfares transport visitors to Paris and other French cities in a short time. Its proximity to France means that Geneva is located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. This waterfront city is where the Rhone River meets Lake Geneva (Lac Léman in French). It is the home of the famed Swiss watches, and is the location of the headquarters of the United Nations, as well as many other organizations.
HISTORY
Geneva has a history being involved in religious issues. John Calvin named Geneva the center of Calvinism in the 16th century. In 1907, Geneva adopted a separation of church and state, and following World War I in 1919, it became the seat of the League of Nations (which became the United Nations after World War II).
